Dewson Street Public Junior School

JUNIOR GREEN THUMBS

Dewson Street Junior Public School has a Pollinator and Butterfly Garden. In early June, we involved the entire school in planting native plants and butterfly friendly plants. It was a huge success!Canoe freshly planted.

We funded the project partly by parent fundraising, partly with Horticultural Society support and also with the support of the David Suzuki Foundation. Purchased at a discounted rate from the Suzuki organization, we planted milkweed along some fences on the perimeter of the property; we planted a butterfly garden kit from LEAF in the playground garden.

Several native plants from the North American Native Plant Society (NANPS) went into our new blue canoe out at the front of the school. The canoe was donated by the David Suzuki Homegrown National Park Project that plans to create a green corridor of canoe plantings all Canoe blooming.along the former path of Garrison Creek, in the heart of Toronto. As well, four beautiful butterfly bushes were planted: two of them in small gardens bordering steps to the playground, another within the LEAF butterfly garden area, and a fourth behind the new canoe.

We gratefully acknowledge the Horts support with our sincere thanks.
