Horticultural Society of Parkdale and Toronto

Community Gardens

Encouraging our community to garden has been a focus of The Hort from the very beginning one hundred and seventy five years ago. Sometimes it took the form of horticultural exhibitions, offering prizes for the best gardens on selected streets, or initiating garden activities at public or private buildings. The Hort has supported gardens at Dewson Public School on and off for over one hundred years. Currently, The Hort supports approximately 15 community-based gardens every year ranging from boulevards and corner parkettes to the recreation of the heritage gardens at Colborne Lodge Museum in High Park.

The Hort is very proud of the wonderful changes these gardens have brought to their respective areas and the community spirit that has been generated around spaces large and small. They truly bring out the soul in our city and soothe the souls of anyone who passes by.

How to Apply for Hort Support for a Community Garden Project

While Hort members are usually involved in these community garden projects, it is not a requirement. If you have a garden project you would like to be considered for support, especially for the purchase of plant materials and soil amendments, please make a proposal and present it to the Board. This written proposal must include the name of the coordinator of the project, the location of the garden, the amount of money desired and an itemized list of what the money is to purchase. Proposals should be sent to the Board’s attention by mail to the Hort address, or my email to the Hort’s email address. Proposals are considered and approved at any Board Meeting. The Board meets monthly except June, July, August and December. The ideal time to submit requests is early in the year for the upcoming gardening season. Our funds are limited, and projects are funded on a first come basis. Gardens that receive support are required to present receipts of the money spent and provide a report of the years progress in the garden.
